Despite numerous opportunities to draw connections between the chapters, each could have been a stand alone blog post - they don't read as anything following an overarching idea. (Even if it could have been, Duhigg didn't make it one.) What exactly did Duhigg want me to take away from this book? I'm left unsure. "Smarter faster better" is not, in and of itself, a theme. At the end of reading this book, I'm actually a bit confused about what it was about: instead of having one cohesive theme, each story read like little bits of mini advice that didn't connect to a larger picture. 'The Power of Habit' had an active influence on my life and changed how I approach trying to achieve my goals, so I expected great things from 'Smarter Faster Better' as well.Īlas, it failed to deliver. After reading Duhigg's first book - 'The Power of Habit' - and loving it, I raced to read this one as soon as I got my hands on an advance reader's copy through NetGalley. Michael Mohler || Pastor at Trinity Point Church and South Carolina Baptist Convention Discipleship Coordinator Teri literally has invited us to breathe again! Prayers from the Pews beckons us back to seeking and seeing our Father’s face by using the book of Acts to pray for our local churches. Kindle || Print || Amazon Reviews || Arkansas Baptist News Review Thirty prayers based on the Book of Acts.Short chapters with discussion questions.More than another study of prayer, Prayers from the Pews is an invitation to pray. Prayers from the Pews is ideal for individuals seeking guidance in praying for their churches as well as small groups who want to experience the power of prayer in their own congregation. Acknowledging the difficulties and short-comings of the “institution of church” while challenging believers to invest in the study of the early church and harness the power of prayer, my desire is to bring voice of hope to the often-hopeless landscape of the modern church experience. In Prayers from the Pews, I explore the connection between embracing Scripture, evaluating personal experience, and experiencing the power in praying for your church. What if the problem with the church isn’t what we are doing but rather what we are not doing? What each of the other characters represents is really only some aspect of the inner state of the hero himself." Ultimately it is in relation to this central figure that all other characters in a story take on their significance. It is the one whose fate we identify with, as we see them gradually developing towards that state of self-realization which marks the end of the story. The key thesis of the book: "However many characters may appear in a story, its real concern is with just one: its hero. Finally, in the resolution, the hero overcomes his burden against the odds. This worsens in the nightmare stage, which is the climax of the plot, where hope is apparently lost. However, this is then followed by a frustration stage, in which the hero has his first confrontation with the enemy, and the illusion of invincibility is lost. This is followed by a dream stage, in which the adventure begins, the hero has some success, and has an illusion of invincibility. The meta-plot begins with the anticipation stage, in which the hero is called to the adventure to come.
